OpenCode and Pi are both open-source terminal coding agents, and the difference between them is philosophical. Pi — Mario Zechner's agent — is radically minimal on purpose: the model gets read, write, edit, and bash, and everything beyond that (subagents, plan mode, custom tools) lives in TypeScript extensions you opt into. The result is a very fast loop, a clean context window, and behavior you can fully audit and reshape. Mid-session model switching and session branching are the power features hiding under the minimalism.
OpenCode ships the batteries: a polished TUI, LSP integration, and session management that works out of the box. You get more capability in the first hour, at the cost of a bigger, more opinionated surface than Pi's deliberately tiny core.
