Cloudflare AI Gateway vs OpenRouter: which should you use?

Choose Cloudflare AI Gateway if you bring your own provider keys or already run on Cloudflare: the gateway is free, and Unified Billing adds 5% to credits. Choose OpenRouter for 500+ models, free models and coding agents beyond Claude, at list price plus 5.5% on credits.

How the two auto routers choose

Both now pick a model for you, in different ways. OpenRouter's openrouter/auto sorts each prompt into one of about 30 task types and ranks models by what everyone on OpenRouter spent on that type over the past seven days, within a cost tier from low to max; with no tier set it behaves like low. Cloudflare's cloudflare/auto, in public beta since September 30, 2026 and free during it, picks from a pool of Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI models and adds open models only when you allow them in a header. Neither accepts Claude Code's Anthropic-format requests for auto routing.

What a coding-agent month costs

Month of coding-agent useCloudflare (Unified Billing)OpenRouterStandard Compute
Typical days, Claude Sonnet 5.5$74$74Standard, $89 ($95 budget)
Typical days, Claude Opus 5.5$148$149Pro, $249 ($269 budget)
Busy days, Claude Sonnet 5.5$608$611Pro Plus, $499 ($549 budget)

Typical and busy are the median and 90th-percentile coding-agent day in our Agent Burn Index (September 13 to October 12, 2026; Claude Code and Codex not in the sample), over 20 working days. List price plus each gateway's fee; on your own Anthropic key both cost list price. Standard Compute plans stop at their budget; routing routine steps to efficient models makes it last longer.

The catch

The fees differ by half a percent; the limits differ more. Cloudflare's 200 requests a minute and OpenRouter's Business-only EU routing are the facts most likely to decide it for a coding team.

Where Standard Compute fits

Standard Compute works like both, one hosted endpoint for Claude, GPT, Gemini and open models, and differs in where the savings come from: a plan from $19 a month with the compute included, and a router that picks the model per request on Anthropic Messages too, a format neither auto router accepts.

FAQ

Is Cloudflare AI Gateway cheaper than OpenRouter?

On your own provider keys, Cloudflare charges nothing and OpenRouter nothing up to $25,000 of use a month. On bought credits, Cloudflare's 5% is half a point below OpenRouter's 5.5%, and OpenRouter has a $0.80 minimum fee per card purchase.

Can Cloudflare AI Gateway replace OpenRouter?

For OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and Groq models, yes. For DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM or most other open models on one bill, OpenRouter's catalog is far larger; Cloudflare's Auto Router can add some open models if you allow them.

Which is better for Claude Code?

OpenRouter, if you want other models in Claude Code: its endpoint is native and covers its whole catalog, though only guaranteed with Anthropic as the provider. Cloudflare's Claude Code setup covers Claude models on Anthropic, Bedrock and Vertex.

Which has better EU support?

OpenRouter's in-region routing keeps EU traffic in the EU on Business and Enterprise plans. Cloudflare lists AI Gateway as not compatible with its Regional Services.
