Codex “You have 1 usage limit reset available”: how to use it (and fix errors)
You have 1 usage limit reset available. Run /usage to use one.
Your account holds a banked Codex reset, a one-time promotional grant (mostly from ChatGPT referral offers) that refreshes your five-hour and weekly Codex windows. Redeem it with /usage in Codex CLI and Redeem reset, or in Settings → Usage in the app. Banked resets expire 30 days after they are added unless the offer says otherwise, and one is only used up if it actually refreshes a window.
What causes it
- Referral promotions: on some Plus and Pro offers, each successful ChatGPT referral adds a reset to your bank. Other promotions can include one.
- A reset leaves your plan limit and credit balance as they are. It refreshes the windows once and moves your weekly reset date to start from the day you resume.
- “Couldn't load usage limit resets” is a known backend problem (openai/codex issue #37928) where the reset count comes back unknown, on web, desktop and CLI alike.
- “Your usage does not need a reset right now” means no window is spent, so the reset stays in the bank.
How to fix it
- Redeem: run
/usagein Codex CLI, choose Redeem reset, pick the reset and confirm “Yes, use reset”. In the app: Settings → Usage, or the profile menu where it says a reset is available. - Save it for a real block: redeem only when a window is spent, since an unneeded redeem does nothing and the reset still expires on its date.
- If resets fail to load: retry, refresh Settings → Usage and check you are in the right account or workspace. If it persists, send in-app feedback; support does not grant manual resets.
- If a reset refreshed the weekly limit but not the five-hour window (issue #43892), restart the client and check
/statusbefore reporting it.

Keep working on a fixed monthly plan
A banked reset buys one more window. If you find yourself redeeming one every week, the allowance is the wrong size for how you use Codex. Codex CLI also runs on Standard Compute: standardcompute launch codex, or a [model_providers] entry in ~/.codex/config.toml with base_url = "https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1", wire_api = "responses" and model standardcompute. Plans cost a fixed $19 to $249 a month for a set compute budget, with no 5-hour or weekly windows. Each key gets 300 to 2,000 requests a minute by plan, and at 100% of the budget new requests return HTTP 402 until renewal, with no overage charge.
Plans from $19 a month with $20 of compute. Eligible new accounts can try $0.25 of compute first, no card. Trial terms
FAQ
How long do banked Codex resets last?
30 days from when they were added to your bank, unless the offer that granted them says otherwise. Expired resets cannot be restored.
Does a reset give me more total usage?
Once. It refreshes the five-hour and weekly windows a single time and restarts the weekly period from when you resume; it does not change your plan's limits.
How do I get more usage limit resets?
Through OpenAI's promotions, mainly ChatGPT referrals on eligible Plus and Pro offers. Support does not hand out courtesy resets.
