The buying decision
Pick ClinePass if its open models do your work and unpublished limits are acceptable. Keep pay-per-token billing for occasional use or one specific model such as Claude. For heavy daily use across Claude, GPT and open models on one fixed bill, a routed monthly plan such as Standard Compute sends routine agent steps to efficient models and hard ones to stronger models.
What each option covers
The open-source Cline extension has no individual seat fee; Enterprise, with SSO and team management, is priced by Cline's sales team. ClinePass covers open-weight models such as GLM-5.3, Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4 Pro, not Claude or GPT. Cline credits are prepaid and spent per request, and models tagged free in the selector cost nothing. Your own key can be any provider's, including an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and that provider bills you directly.
Why a short instruction can create a large bill
Cline may read files, call tools, inspect failures and try again. Those steps generate additional model requests. A comparison that counts only your first prompt misses the repository context and subsequent tool results. Run a representative bug fix with a clear stopping point, then compare the provider's usage record with Cline's displayed estimate. A router's budget accounting may differ from a fixed per-token price entered in the client.
Connect a monthly API plan
Standard Compute supplies the model access; Cline remains your coding agent. Standard Compute is in Cline's API Provider list from Cline 4.1.25.
- Open Cline settings and pick Standard Compute under API Provider (on 4.1.24 and older, choose OpenAI Compatible).
- Set Base URL to https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1.
- Paste your Standard Compute API key under OpenAI Compatible API Key and enter standardcompute as the Model ID.
- Check the selected model's context, output and tool capabilities before running a task. Use a small, reversible change for the first test.
Make a $40 ceiling a real ceiling
Separate the price you pay from the compute allowance you consume. Check whether each provider stops requests, automatically adds credits, or allows overages. Disable automatic top-ups if you use a prepaid provider and need a spending ceiling. On Standard Compute, the plan budget stops further use at exhaustion; upgrading is a separate decision. Your Cline task may need more budget than a small plan includes.
