Keep direct API billing if you use Cline occasionally or require a specific model. Compare a monthly API budget if you want a fixed subscription charge and accept a finite allowance.
What you actually pay for
The open-source Cline extension has no individual seat fee. You can use Cline's provider or bring an API key from another provider. Enterprise features are a separate purchase. A paid model subscription and a Cline enterprise seat solve different problems; buying one does not automatically include the other. Check Cline's current pricing and any separate ClinePass offer before choosing.
Why a short instruction can create a large bill
Cline may read files, call tools, inspect failures and try again. Those steps generate additional model requests. A comparison that counts only your first prompt misses the repository context and subsequent tool results. Run a representative bug fix with a clear stopping point, then compare the provider's usage record with Cline's displayed estimate. A router's budget accounting may differ from a fixed per-token price entered in the client.
Connect a monthly API plan
Standard Compute supplies the model access; Cline remains your coding agent. Use the OpenAI Compatible provider settings in the extension.
- Open Cline settings and choose OpenAI Compatible.
- Set Base URL to https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1.
- Paste your Standard Compute API key locally and enter standardcompute as the Model ID.
- Check the selected model's context, output and tool capabilities before running a task. Use a small, reversible change for the first test.
Make a $40 ceiling a real ceiling
Separate the price you pay from the compute allowance you consume. Check whether each provider stops requests, automatically adds credits, or allows overages. Disable automatic top-ups if you use a prepaid provider and need a spending ceiling. On Standard Compute, the plan budget stops further use at exhaustion; upgrading is a separate decision. Your Cline task may need more budget than a small plan includes.
Run your own comparison
Use the same task, starting revision and acceptance check. Record every retry and failed attempt so the result reflects the work you actually paid for.
