Should you run OpenClaw on a Mac mini or a VPS?
Use a VPS unless you need macOS: a small VPS runs OpenClaw for about $7 to $24 a month in a datacenter, and a Mac mini costs $899 up front. The Mac earns its place with iMessage, macOS-only tools or a visible browser.
# OpenClaw's installer, without the setup wizard for now
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- --no-onboard
# Your key, where the gateway service reads it
mkdir -p ~/.openclaw && chmod 700 ~/.openclaw
echo 'STANDARD_COMPUTE_API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY' >> ~/.openclaw/.env
chmod 600 ~/.openclaw/.env
# Save the Provider tab as standardcompute.json, then:
openclaw config set --batch-file standardcompute.json
openclaw config validate
# Installs the always-on service. Choose "Keep existing model config"
openclaw onboard --install-daemon
openclaw models status # Default: standardcompute/standardcompute
# Keep the Mac awake: System Settings > Energy >
# "Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off"
On macOS the service is a LaunchAgent; on Linux it is a systemd user unit. The provider file passed openclaw config validate on OpenClaw 2026.10.3, and onboarding kept it as the default model.
First-year cost of each host
When the Mac mini pays off
Against a $24 droplet, an $899 Mac mini breaks even in about three years; against a Hetzner CX23, in about ten. Buy the Mac for what only a Mac does: OpenClaw's iMessage channel needs a Mac signed into Messages, and macOS-only tools need the gateway or a paired node on macOS.
OpenClaw's docs describe a split if you want both: keep the gateway on an always-on host and pair your Mac as a node for its screen, camera and commands.
| Host | Good for |
|---|---|
| Mac mini | iMessage, macOS apps, a visible browser window |
| Raspberry Pi | A small box on your home network, next to local devices |
| Hetzner | The lowest-cost datacenter host; EU locations for the CX plans |
| DigitalOcean | An OpenClaw 1-Click image, sized at 4 GB and 2 CPUs for one to five users |
| Oracle Always Free | A free server, with idle reclamation and capacity limits |
Prices from Apple, Raspberry Pi, DigitalOcean, Hetzner and Oracle; DigitalOcean's sizing from its OpenClaw 1-Click docs.
Uptime on each
- A Mac mini at home goes down with your power and internet, and stops when it sleeps. Turn off automatic sleep, and expect macOS updates to restart it.
- A VPS has a datacenter connection and no sleep, but runs headless: browser work happens in a headless browser, and you reach the Control UI through an SSH tunnel.
- On either, install OpenClaw as a service so it restarts after a crash or reboot.
The model bill on either host
The host does not change these figures. A busy day on Opus 5.5 costs about as much as ten months of a Hetzner CX23.
| Sonnet 5.5, metered | Opus 5.5, metered | Standard Compute | |
|---|---|---|---|
| One busy day | About $35 | About $70 | Up to the $20 budget of the $19 plan |
| Busy every day for a month | $1,048 | $2,095 | $19 |
| What stops it | A spend limit, if you set one | A spend limit, if you set one | The budget: new requests get HTTP 402 |
A busy day is our 90th-percentile agent-day: 775 requests and 79M tokens over a median of 14 active hours, priced at list price with the cache hits it really had (method). A day like that can use the whole Starter budget; smart routing stretches it, and larger plans raise it.
The catch
If you plan to run local models on the Mac mini as well, the base M6's 16 GB is shared by macOS, OpenClaw and the model. Check that the model you want fits before you choose the base configuration.
Where Standard Compute fits
Standard Compute is an OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible API at https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1, with plans from $19 a month. Each plan has a fixed compute budget ($20 on Starter); when it is used, new requests get HTTP 402 and running ones finish, so there is no overage. It works the same from a Mac mini or a VPS, so you can move hosts without touching the model setup.
FAQ
Do I need a Mac mini to run OpenClaw?
No. OpenClaw runs on macOS and Linux, and on Windows through WSL2. You need a Mac only for macOS-only tools such as iMessage.
How much does a Mac mini for OpenClaw cost?
The base Mac mini is $899 in the US with an M6 chip, 16 GB of memory and a 256 GB SSD. Apple rates it at 4 W idle, about 3 kWh a month around the clock.
Is a VPS or a Mac mini more reliable for OpenClaw?
A VPS, for uptime: datacenter power and network, and no sleep. A Mac mini at home depends on your power and internet and needs automatic sleep turned off.
Can I use iMessage if OpenClaw runs on a VPS?
Yes, with a Mac signed into Messages. OpenClaw's iMessage channel runs the imsg tool on that Mac; point channels.imessage.cliPath at an SSH wrapper that runs imsg there.
Can I use a Mac mini and a VPS together?
Yes. Run the gateway on the VPS and pair the Mac as a node; nodes add screen, camera and command access on that device without running the gateway.
