Meta Muse vs Hermes Agent: which personal agent should you use?

Pick Meta Muse if you want a personal agent on your phone with no setup: it is free for most use, runs on Meta's Muse Spark in a managed computer, and works inside WhatsApp, but only in the US and only on Meta's model. Pick Hermes Agent if you want to choose the model and decide where your data goes: it is free and MIT-licensed, runs on any model, including Muse Spark through Meta's Model API, and answers in WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, iMessage and 20+ other chat apps.

What Meta Muse is

Meta launched Muse on September 8, 2026 as "a secure, private personal AI agent that proactively helps with people's goals and suggests ideas" (Meta). It sends emails, books travel, fills in forms and keeps working after you close the app, from a virtual machine Meta runs for each person. A separate Sentinel agent on that machine approves anything going to the internet, and Muse can't access your passwords or payment details directly. It started in the US on iOS, Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp; a Mac app followed on September 18 and iPad on October 7.

Meta says Muse is "free for most of what people need", with paid plans for more. TechCrunch reports Power at $20 and Maximum at $100 a month (TechCrunch).

Muse runs on Meta's Muse Spark and has no model picker, API key or base URL setting. Meta says conversations aren't shared with its ad systems, and you can opt out of having your Muse interactions used for training (Engadget).

What Hermes Agent is

Hermes Agent is Nous Research's MIT-licensed agent: it remembers you across sessions, writes reusable skills from finished tasks, runs scheduled jobs and can drive your desktop in the background (repo). Its gateway answers in WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Slack, Teams, email, SMS and iMessage through BlueBubbles or Photon (messaging).

Hermes works with any model. Meta's Model API (a US-only preview) is a built-in provider (--provider meta-ai), so you can run Muse Spark itself; Hermes's docs warn that Meta may train on prompts sent to the -contributor tiers and point confidential work to the standard ones (providers).

What Hermes Agent costs to run

Where Meta Muse is better

  • No setup. You install the app or open WhatsApp. Hermes needs a computer or server that stays on, and someone to update it.
  • Free for most people, model included. With Hermes the agent is free but you pay for, or host, the model.
  • A managed computer per person, with Sentinel reviewing what goes out. With Hermes, sandboxing is what you configure.
  • Consumer connections: Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Spotify, Google Workspace and Meta's own apps, plus a phone-first app.

Where Hermes Agent is better

  • Model choice: Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, a local model or Muse Spark itself, and a cheaper model for routine jobs.
  • Availability: Muse launched in the US only. Hermes runs anywhere you can run it.
  • Privacy: Muse uses interactions for training unless you opt out. Hermes sends prompts only to the model API you configure, so you can pick one that doesn't train on them.
  • More chat apps: Telegram, Signal, Slack, Teams, Discord, email and SMS, not only WhatsApp.
  • Memory and skills you own as files, and a learning loop that turns finished tasks into reusable skills.

Run Hermes Agent on one API

A personal agent that checks your inbox, plans and runs routines makes many model calls a day. One OpenAI-compatible endpoint keeps it to one key and one bill.

  • Cost first: send the model standardcompute and the router sends each step to the cheapest model that can do it. Routine steps such as reading pages, filling forms, summarizing and scheduled check-ins can go to low-cost models, and Claude Fable 5.1 or GPT-6 Astra handle the steps that need them. An exact model ID, such as anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5, always stays on that model.
  • For every model we vet providers for price, uptime and speed, with automatic fallback when one fails, so a bot that runs overnight does not stop because one host is down.
  • Opt-in Compliance rules restrict a key, team or company to provider endpoints in Europe or the US. They cover where the model runs. The bot's computer runs wherever you host the project.
  • We don't train on your prompts or store them.
  • Plans start at $19 a month for a fixed compute budget. At the end of the budget requests stop with HTTP 402 until renewal, so a looping bot cannot run up a bill.

Set up Hermes Agent on Standard Compute

  1. Install Hermes Agent, then the Standard Compute launcher, and run standardcompute launch hermes. It saves a Standard Compute profile and leaves your usual Hermes profile alone.
  2. Without the launcher: run hermes model, choose Custom endpoint, and enter https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1, your Standard Compute key and the model standardcompute.
  3. In Bot Mode, leave a Bot's model pin empty to inherit that model, or pin an exact ID such as anthropic/claude-sonnet-5.5 on the one Bot that needs it.

Hermes Agent setup guide

The catch

Hermes is not a phone app you hand to anyone: you host it, keep it updated and decide what it may touch, and an agent with your email and accounts can do real damage if a prompt injection lands. If you are in the US and zero setup matters more than choosing your model, Muse is the easier pick.

Where Standard Compute fits

One OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible key for Hermes, with a router that sends each step to the cheapest model that can do it, providers vetted for price, uptime and speed, opt-in Europe or US rules and no training on prompts. Plans start at $19 a month.

FAQ

Is Hermes Agent better than Meta Muse?

For model choice, privacy and availability outside the US, yes. For a personal agent that works on your phone with no setup, Muse is easier: it is free for most use, includes the model and runs in a computer Meta manages.

Can Hermes Agent use Meta's Muse Spark model?

Yes. Meta's Model API is a built-in Hermes provider: set MODEL_API_KEY and run hermes chat --provider meta-ai --model muse-spark-1.3. Meta may train on prompts sent to the -contributor tiers, so use the standard models for confidential work.

Can Meta Muse use another model or my own API key?

No. Muse runs on Muse Spark only and has no model picker, API key or base URL setting.

How much does Meta Muse cost?

Meta says Muse is free for most of what people need. TechCrunch reports two paid plans, Power at $20 and Maximum at $100 a month.

Is Meta Muse available outside the US?

Not at launch: Meta rolled Muse out in the United States. Hermes Agent has no region limit, and the model provider you choose sets where prompts are processed.

Which is more private, Meta Muse or Hermes Agent?

Hermes can be. Muse uses interactions for training unless you opt out, though Meta says they are not shared with its ad systems. Hermes is self-hosted and sends prompts to the model API you configure: Standard Compute doesn't train on them or store them, and an opt-in Europe or US Compliance rule limits which provider endpoints may serve the key.
