Looking for an alternative to Cursor?
Cursor is the best-known AI code editor, sold in plans whose usage pool refreshes weekly, with third-party models billed at API list price; Standard Compute is a cost-optimized API for the agents you run outside it, where the router sends each step to the cheapest model that can do it on one monthly budget.
TL;DR
Keep Cursor if you live in its editor and the weekly pool covers you. Move agent work to Standard Compute when list-price metering or the weekly allowance is what you keep running into.
What Cursor offers
Free $0; Plus $8 a month (Grok models only); Premium $30 (4x Plus usage, third-party models at API list price, cloud agents); Super $100 (15x); Ultra $200 (50x); Teams from $30 per user a month with pooled usage. The allowance refreshes weekly; after it you buy top-offs or wait. With your own key, individual plans don't count those requests against included usage, while Teams and Enterprise still add a Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens. (Verified on cursor.com/pricing and Cursor's API keys help page, 2026-11-07.)
- A polished editor with Tab completion, agent mode and cloud agents in one product
- A weekly refresh, so one heavy day does not use up the whole month
- Third-party models at API list price with spending caps you set
- Team plans with SSO, usage analytics and privacy settings
Why people look for an alternative
- Usage is stated only as multiples of Plus, so you cannot plan around a published amount
- Hitting the weekly allowance mid-task means top-offs or waiting
- Third-party models are metered at list price, so a busy week of Claude or GPT costs more
- Own keys work only for chat models, requests still pass through Cursor's servers, and Cursor's Zero Data Retention does not apply to them
Cursor vs Cursor with your own key vs Standard Compute
Cursor's plan covers the editor and a weekly pool. Your own key moves chat models to your provider's bill but leaves Tab on Cursor. Standard Compute is the cost-optimized key for the agents you run outside Cursor, and for Cursor's chat through the OpenAI key setting.
| Option | What you pay | How the limit works | Model choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor plan | Plus to Ultra, or Teams per user | A usage pool that refreshes weekly, stated as multiples of Plus; top-offs after it | Cursor's models; third-party models at API list price |
| Cursor with your own key | Your provider's per-token price; Teams add a token rate | Your provider's limits; chat models only, Tab stays on Cursor | OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure OpenAI or AWS Bedrock keys |
| Standard Compute | From $19, $19 compute budget | One monthly budget for every model; stops at 100%, no overage | The router picks the cheapest capable model per step, or pin a model ID |

Which one fits your work
| Pick | When |
|---|---|
| Standard Compute | Agents outside the editor (Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode, Cline, Hermes) that you want on one key and one monthly budget |
| Long agent runs where routine steps should go to cheaper models and only the hard ones to Claude or GPT | |
| Teams that need opt-in Europe or US rules per company, team or key, and no training on or storing of prompts | |
| A fixed monthly price instead of list-price metering on third-party models | |
| Cursor | You want the editor itself: Tab completion, inline edits and Cursor's agent UI |
| Your usage fits the weekly pool of the plan you have | |
| Your team already standardized on Cursor for SSO and analytics |
Switching takes one config change
Standard Compute is OpenAI-compatible, so any tool or SDK that lets you set a custom base URL migrates in minutes:
Base URL = https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1 API key = your Standard Compute key Model = standardcompute

FAQ
What is the best Cursor alternative?
It depends on what you want to replace. For the editor itself, Cursor is hard to beat and GitHub Copilot is the closest in VS Code. For the model bill behind your agents, a cost-routed API is the alternative: on Standard Compute the router sends each step to the cheapest model that can do it, providers are vetted for price, uptime and speed with automatic fallback, and opt-in Europe or US rules apply per company, team or key. We don't train on your prompts or store them.
Can I use Standard Compute inside Cursor?
For chat and agent requests, yes: our Cursor guide shows the OpenAI key and base URL setting. Cursor's own help page says custom keys work only with chat models, Tab completion keeps using Cursor's models, requests still pass through Cursor's servers, and Cursor's Zero Data Retention does not apply to your own keys. Your Cursor plan is still billed.
Why does Cursor say I've reached my usage limit?
Your plan's usage pool is used up for the week. Cursor's pricing page says the allowance refreshes weekly, and until then you can buy top-offs or wait. Third-party models also draw at API list price, so heavy Claude or GPT use empties the pool faster.
Is Standard Compute cheaper than Cursor?
They charge for different things. Cursor's plan pays for the editor and a weekly pool; Standard Compute plans cost $19 to $249 a month for a fixed compute budget that every model draws from, and the router keeps the cost per step down by sending routine steps to cheaper models. If you mostly use Tab and light chat, Cursor alone is the better deal.
