Which API should you use with Zed?

Zed's agent panel costs nothing with your own API key, so the simplest route to one predictable bill is Standard Compute, from $19 a month, added as an OpenAI-compatible provider at https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1. The alternative is Zed Pro, which bundles a small token allowance and then bills hosted models per token. With your own key, spend goes straight to that provider and Zed itself stays free.

Guide updated 2026-10-13. Check each provider's current terms below.
Light or occasional use
For a few prompts a day, Zed Pro's included tokens or a pay-as-you-go key will likely cost the least. Pro also brings edit predictions, which are separate from the agent panel.
One fixed monthly bill
For long agent-panel sessions, a Standard Compute key keeps the model bill flat while routing sends routine turns to efficient models. Requests stop when the monthly budget is spent, so size the plan to a real week of use.

Zed Pro$10/moIncludes $5 of tokens on Zed-hosted models, then usage-based billing at API list price +10%. The Personal plan is $0 and runs on your own API keys. Source: zed.dev
Standard Compute (us)From $19/moStandard Compute starts at $19/month with a $20 monthly compute budget. Requests stop when that budget is exhausted until renewal or a plan change; there are no automatic overage charges. Requests are not slowed as the budget is used. Pin any model by its exact ID, or let smart routing pick per request. It is a fixed bill with a finite allowance.

Try one task before choosing a plan

  1. Check the API format and model configuration supported by your installed Zed version.
  2. Run a small task on a clean branch and review the result, elapsed time and compute used.
  3. Estimate your actual monthly workload before selecting a larger allowance.

Disclosure: this guide is maintained by Standard Compute, one of the options above. Choose based on task quality, supported features and total cost for your workload. Light usage may cost less on a usage-based API; sustained workloads need enough allowance on any subscription.
