What does Palo Alto Networks buying Portkey mean for Portkey users?
Portkey is now a Palo Alto Networks product, sold as Prisma AIRS AI Gateway: Palo Alto announced the deal on April 30, 2026, closed it on May 29 and made the gateway generally available on July 16. Little has changed for current users so far. portkey.ai still sells its own plans, and Prisma AIRS AI Gateway has no public price.
What happened
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Apr 30, 2026 | Palo Alto agrees to buy Portkey as the gateway for Prisma AIRS, its AI security platform. Price not disclosed | Press release |
| May 29, 2026 | The acquisition closes | Press release |
| Jul 16, 2026 | Prisma AIRS AI Gateway goes GA, with model access rules, budget enforcement and agent identity | Palo Alto blog |
What changes, and what doesn't (yet)
| Topic | Status |
|---|---|
| Name | portkey.ai now reads "Portkey is now PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway" |
| Existing customers | Palo Alto says it "will continue to support existing and new Portkey customers". No migration deadline |
| Plans | Developer free (10,000 logged requests), Production $49 a month, Enterprise custom |
| Open-source gateway | Public under MIT; last push May 25, 2026 |
| Token billing | Through your own provider keys, as before |
If you're reconsidering
| Option | Pick it when | How you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Compute | You want one bill for coding agents, with the model usage included | $19 to $249 a month; a plan or limit on each key |
| LiteLLM | You want to self-host an open-source gateway that is still under active development | Free to run plus your provider bills; Enterprise features by license |
| Prisma AIRS | You need guardrails, a VPC data plane or HIPAA inside a Palo Alto rollout | A quote from Palo Alto Networks |
The catch
Prisma AIRS is built for company-wide AI security: identity checks for agents and access rules across every app. A team that only needs its coding agents on a budget pays Portkey for logs and still gets a separate invoice from each model provider.
Where Standard Compute fits
Standard Compute includes the model usage in the plan, so a team gets one bill instead of a gateway plan plus provider invoices. Each key gets its own plan or limit, and Europe or US region rules can apply to a key, a team or a whole company. If your security team standardizes on Palo Alto, stay on Prisma AIRS.
