Which API should you use with GitHub Copilot?

For long GitHub Copilot agent sessions in VS Code, add Standard Compute as a Custom Endpoint model (base URL https://api.stdcmpt.com/v1) and those sessions run on a flat plan from $19 a month instead of Copilot's own models. Copilot meters chat, agent mode, code review and Copilot CLI against monthly GitHub AI Credits, so long agent runs are what drain a plan first. VS Code's docs say bring-your-own-key models work even without a Copilot plan; inline code completions are the part that still needs a GitHub account.

Guide updated 2026-10-13. Check each provider's current terms below.
Light or occasional use
If your agent sessions fit inside Pro's monthly credits, the $10 plan is hard to beat, and it covers inline completions as well. Watch the credit meter through a busy week before buying extra credits.
One fixed monthly bill
Keep Copilot Free or Pro for completions and pick the Standard Compute model in the chat picker for long agent runs. Agents only list models with tool calling enabled, which the config below turns on.

API and subscription options for Copilot

OptionPriceWhat you get
GitHub Copilot Pro / Pro+ / Max$10 / $39 / $100 per moIncludes $15, $70 or $200 a month of GitHub AI Credits (base plus a flex allotment GitHub says may change). Chat, agent mode, code review, the cloud agent and Copilot CLI all draw from them; paid plans can buy more credits. Source: github.com
Standard Compute (us)From $19/moStandard Compute starts at $19/month with a $20 monthly compute budget. Requests stop when that budget is exhausted until renewal or a plan change; there are no automatic overage charges. Requests are not slowed as the budget is used. Pin any model by its exact ID, or let smart routing pick per request. It is a fixed bill with a finite allowance.

Prices and allowances can change. Copilot prices and credit amounts were read from github.com/features/copilot/plans on October 13, 2026. Restart VS Code if the model does not appear in the picker. The input variable keeps the key out of the file.

Try one task before choosing a plan

  1. Check the API format and model configuration supported by your installed Copilot version.
  2. Run a small task on a clean branch and review the result, elapsed time and compute used.
  3. Estimate your actual monthly workload before selecting a larger allowance.

Disclosure: this guide is maintained by Standard Compute, one of the options above. Choose based on task quality, supported features and total cost for your workload. Light usage may cost less on a usage-based API; sustained workloads need enough allowance on any subscription.
