What to watch for

Output speed is measured on one provider per model. The same open-weight model can be several times faster or slower on another host, and speed drops on very long prompts.

FAQ

Does a faster model make a coding agent faster?
Only partly. Output speed sets how fast a reply streams once it starts. How long a task takes also depends on the wait before the first answer token, which includes thinking time for reasoning models, and on how many steps the agent needs.
How is output speed measured?
Artificial Analysis reports the median output tokens per second it measures on the provider named for each model, at the reasoning effort in the model's variant name.
Are fast models cheaper?
Often, because small models are both fast and cheap. Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite costs $0.0082 per coding-agent request on our traffic. Speed and price still vary a lot between hosts of the same open model.
